NEW & IMPROVED RAILWAY STATIONS

New and improved stations to support growing demand, future development and economic potential.

Newton le Willows Station

Newton le Willows station will be transformed into a transport hub, with a new bus interchange and extended car park facilities and a new booking hall on the south side of the station. There will also be improved access via new lifts, subway and stairs. Work has begun on building the new station which is costing £17.95m and is funded by the Liverpool City Region through the Local Growth Fund and Merseytravel.

BENEFITS

The improvements will help local people capitalise on Newton-le-Willows’ enviable position of being half-way between Manchester and Liverpool, helping open up leisure and employment opportunities in both City Regions. It builds on the recent electrification of the rail line which means that journeys between Liverpool and Manchester can take as little as 30 minutes.

The development will also help support the future development of the nearby former Parkside Colliery site.

WHEN

The new facilities are expected to be complete and open to the public in March 2018.

Maghull North Station

A new station is to be built between Maghull and Town Green Stations on Merseyrail’s Northern Line Work includes the creation of a new ticket office, provision of park and ride facilities and lifts and a footbridge to platforms. The project is funded by the Liverpool City Region through the Local Growth Fund and Merseytravel.

BENEFITS

The new station will make the high-performing Merseyrail network more accessible to local people now and in the future. It supports existing demand and demand that will be generated by new housing and employment developments expected in the area.

WHEN

Work is due to start on site in August 2017, with the station opening planned for May 2018.
